Complete Setup Guide

This is the one guide to follow from start to finish. Begin with a brand-new WordPress site and, step by step, end with a styled, working community. Each step takes a few minutes. Do them in order and you will not have to guess what comes next.

Time needed: about 30-45 minutes. You need: a WordPress site (version 6.5 or newer, PHP 8.0 or newer) and an admin login.

Step 1: Start with a fresh WordPress install

  1. Install WordPress the usual way (most hosts have a one-click installer), or use a local tool like Local, XAMPP, or Studio.
  2. Log in at yoursite.com/wp-admin.
  3. Confirm your versions under Tools > Site Health > Info. You need WordPress 6.5+ and PHP 8.0+. If either is lower, update before continuing.

You do not need any plugins yet. The theme goes on first.

Step 2: Install and activate BuddyX

BuddyX is free on WordPress.org, so you can install it without leaving your dashboard.

  1. Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New.
  2. Search for BuddyX.
  3. Click Install, then Activate.

Your site now uses BuddyX. Visit the front end once to confirm it loads. It already looks clean out of the box, so there is nothing to fix here.

Step 3: Add your community engine (BuddyNext)

BuddyX is powered by BuddyNext, our own community engine. This is what adds member profiles, activity feeds, Spaces, and messaging. (BuddyX also works with BuddyPress and BuddyBoss if you already use one of those, but BuddyNext is the complete, first-party option we recommend.)

  1. Download BuddyNext from buddynext.com (free to start).
  2. In your dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin, choose the downloaded zip, and click Install Now.
  3. Click Activate.

Your community features are now live. Members can register, build profiles, join Spaces, and post to the feed, all styled by BuddyX automatically.

Step 4: Add demo content (optional but recommended)

Starting from a blank site is harder than starting from an example you can edit. BuddyX ships starter patterns and pages so you are not staring at an empty screen.

  1. Go to Pages > Add New and use the block inserter's Patterns tab to drop in ready-made sections (hero, pricing, footer, and more).
  2. Set your homepage under Settings > Reading > Your homepage displays > A static page.

Now you have a real page to brand instead of a blank canvas.

Step 5: Set your brand (logo, colors, fonts)

Everything visual lives in one place: Appearance > Customize. You do not need to touch most of it. Start with these three.

  1. Logo: open Site Identity, upload your logo, and set the site title and tagline.
  2. Colors: open Colors & Skin and pick a preset, or set 1-3 of your own colors. Most sites only need a primary color.
  3. Fonts: open Typography and choose a font preset. The defaults read well, so this is optional.

Click Publish to save. Your site now looks like yours.

Step 6: Set up your header and menus

  1. In the Customizer, open Site Header to choose how the top of every page looks (logo position, menu, search, and the cart or account icons).
  2. Go to Appearance > Menus (or the Customizer's Menus panel), create a menu, add your key pages, and assign it to the Primary location.

A clear menu is how visitors find their way around, so give this one a minute.

Step 7: Turn on dark mode (optional)

BuddyX ships a light and a dark mode with a visitor toggle.

  1. In the Customizer, open Colors & Skin and enable the dark-mode toggle.
  2. Load your site and click the toggle to confirm both modes look right.

Step 8: Go live and check the member journey

Before you share the site, walk through it the way a member will.

  1. Open your homepage logged out. It should look finished, not like a default install.
  2. Register a test account and confirm you can build a profile.
  3. Visit the members and Spaces pages to confirm the community renders correctly.
  4. Post to the activity feed to confirm posting works.

If every step above looks right, you are ready to invite real members.
